Get Buddy Dive Resort & Buddy’s Reef into your living room

Are you daydreaming about your favorite Dive Resort on Bonaire? Thanks to Reef Smart, you can explore Buddy Dive Resort AND Buddy´s Reef in your living room!

Last summer, Ian Popple and Peter McDougall from Reef Smart Guides visited Bonaire to map several reefs. In addition to updating some of the reef maps in their Bonaire Guide Book, they created amazing 3D reefs in virtual and augmented reality.

But how did they do it?

Ian and Peter used multiple cameras, attached to a diver propulsion vehicle (DPV), which was tracked back and forth across the reef taking images continuously throughout a single dive. In total, over 10,000 images were used to create this 3D model using a technique known as photogrammetry, which creates a “digital twin” of the underwater habitat. This model can also be used in augmented reality and virtual reality.
